About the Business Unit

AmcoGiffen has secured several long‑term frameworks with key clients and is expanding its Civil & Structural Design capability. As part of this growth, we are establishing a dedicated design team in Cumbernauld. We have multiple openings at various levels for engineers who are committed to delivering high‑quality, efficient, and innovative design solutions.

Our in‑house team includes specialists across a range of competencies, responsible for delivering design engineering services on civils, rail, and infrastructure projects. Current and upcoming work includes CP7 frameworks, asset management contracts, infrastructure enhancements, and tendered rail/civils schemes.

Typical projects include:

  • Bridge reconstruction, replacement, refurbishment, and strengthening
  • Station upgrades, including platforms and access‑for‑all schemes
  • Structural works across bridges, tunnels, footbridges, and associated assets

The Role

As a Design Engineer, you will develop technical solutions that meet the team’s budget, programme, and quality requirements. You’ll contribute to the full design lifecycle, from feasibility through to detailed design, and play an active role in ensuring safe, efficient, and robust engineering outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Applying sound engineering principles to propose confident, practical solutions.
  • Challenging briefs constructively to develop clear, innovative, and buildable designs.
  • Designing and checking engineering solutions across a range of civil and structural projects.
  • Producing clear, consistent calculations, reports, and sketches aligned with current Codes of Practice and Standards.
  • Communicating design intent effectively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Representing the design function in meetings with project teams and external partners.
  • Supporting the team’s financial, quality, and programme objectives.
  • Promoting safe working practices across all activities.

About You

  • Degree‑qualified Civil Engineer (BSc / BEng / CEng).
  • Experience in civil engineering design, ideally within the rail sector (bridges, structures, stations, platforms, etc.).
  • Incorporated or Chartered status, or actively working towards professional membership (ICE / IStructE).
  • Experience gained within client, contractor, or consultancy organisations is welcome.
