Mechanical Design Engineer Permanent Full-Time
Salary – Circa £40,000 DOE
Location – Office based in Hertfordshire
Join a leading employee-owned specialist with over three decades of expertise in the design and manufacture of high-quality, cutting-edge environmental and temperature testing equipment. They provide a range of engineering solutions, from off-the-shelf units to complex, bespoke "start-from-scratch" projects, serving the aerospace, defence, and medical industries. They have formed strong partnerships with prestigious companies such as BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce.
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer proficient in SolidWorks, specifically within Sheet Metal and Weldment environments. As the company brings its mechanical design in-house to eliminate production bottlenecks, they need a designer with a strong shop-floor background. You will bridge the gap between bespoke concepts and practical manufacturing by creating comprehensive drawings for both fabrication and client approval.
Responsibilities, but are not limited to
- Creating detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks for box-section stainless steel frames and complex sheet metal assemblies
- Developing designs for entire chamber assemblies, integrating additional material and parts such as, mineral fibre insulation, electrical motors, seals and hinges
- Acting as a technical point of contact, producing 3D/2D drawings specifically for client approval and sign-off
- Spending time on the shop floor to reverse-engineer existing skeleton chambers and successful legacy designs into SolidWorks
- Specifying bend radii, fold sequences, and tolerances to support accurate fabrication and assembly of parts
- Working "hands-on" to assist with assembly and prototyping phases to ensure designs are practical for fabricators
- Working alongside senior members of the team to integrate design aspects such as control panels, switchgear, and refrigeration systems
- Identifying and liaising with external fabricating companies and material suppliers
Experiences required
- Professional proficiency in SolidWorks, including Sheet Metal & Weldments environments (experience with Inventor, Solid Edge, or similar is also beneficial)
- A Mechanical Engineering degree (BEng) or a time-served apprenticeship
- A deep understanding of sheet metal limitations, weldments, fold logic, and assembly sequences
- The ability to calculate tolerances, stress points for frames, and sheet metal bend deductions
- Ideally "come from the tools" with hands-on workshop experience that informs your design decisions
