We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to play a key role in developing innovative mechanical systems that enable advanced testing, validation, and research activities. You will help shape the future of renewable energy by delivering high‑impact engineering solutions across a range of pioneering projects.


As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will:

  • Lead mechanical design activity on assigned projects and act as the technical authority for mechanical matters.
  • Design test equipment, mechanical systems, and bespoke components for novel renewable energy prototypes.
  • Develop 3D CAD concepts, detailed layouts and drawings, and validate designs using appropriate modelling and analysis tools.
  • Review and guide the work of junior engineers to ensure design quality and compliance with standards.
  • Produce and maintain high‑quality design documentation, records and reports aligned with ISO requirements.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams and test facility specialists to develop assets, methods and capabilities.
  • Ensure all designs meet Health & Safety requirements and promote safe working practices.
  • Provide technical input for tenders, proposals and new business opportunities.
  • Keep up to date with emerging technologies and apply innovative engineering approaches to project challenges.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (HND with relevant experience considered).
  • Strong competency in 3D CAD for designing complex parts, assemblies and mechanical systems.
  • Good understanding of engineering drawings, tolerancing and relevant standards.
  • Proven experience designing mechanical systems or components in operational environments.
  • Proficiency in mechanical analysis techniques, including FEA and mathematical modelling tools.
  • Strong awareness of safety requirements within engineering, testing or R&D environments.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design codes and industry standards.
  • Ability to produce clear, high‑quality design reports and technical documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work both independently and within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience working within accredited environments such as ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001 or ISO 17025.


Desirable

  • Chartered or working towards professional registration.
  • Project management capability.
  • Strong customer‑facing skills and ability to work effectively with external stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting commissioning activities or facility development.



Working Environment

This role is based across our Blyth facilities and some travel may be required as part or your role.
