About the Role
We are seeking a
Senior / Principal Electrical Design Engineer to join a respected and growing M&E consultancy in Southampton. This is a hands-on, leadership-focused role, ideal for an engineer ready to take ownership of complex building services projects across healthcare, education, research, commercial, and industrial sectors.
As a
Senior / Principal Electrical Design Engineer, you’ll oversee technical delivery, mentor junior engineers, and engage directly with clients, ensuring sustainable, low-carbon electrical solutions are delivered to the highest standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead electrical design packages on medium to large-scale projects, from concept through to construction and handover
- Oversee technical quality and compliance with UK regulations, BS 7671, and client requirements
- Mentor, manage, and review work of junior and intermediate engineers
- Coordinate with mechanical, sustainability, and BIM teams for fully integrated MEP designs
- Liaise with clients, architects, and contractors, taking ownership of project relationships and technical outcomes
- Prepare design risk assessments, project briefs, specifications, and technical reports
- Contribute to bids, fee proposals, resourcing, and project planning
- Drive innovation and sustainability in electrical design, including smart systems and low-carbon strategies
- Support business growth through QA, internal process improvements, and team development
Candidate Profile
- Degree-qualified in Electrical or Building Services Engineering (BEng, MEng, or equivalent)
- 7+ years’ consultancy experience in building services electrical design
- Strong expertise in low-voltage power, lighting, fire alarms, communications, and containment systems
- Proficient in Amtech, Dialux, AutoCAD; Revit/BIM experience highly desirable
- Chartered or actively working towards CEng status (CIBSE/IET)
- Proven ability to manage projects, lead technical meetings, and build client relationships
- Strong leadership skills and commercial awareness, capable of delivering projects on time and within budget
